introduction

Maps, maps, maps... Perhaps the biggest issue facing many cyclists is; "where ya gonna go?" In this section I will showcase a selection of my personal rides along the National Cycle Network in Southeast Wales.

Clydach & Abergavenny Wander

Including NCN Routes 467, 46, 47, 49, & 466
Distance: 66.4 miles

A wonderful day. I rode up the Sirhowy Valley to Tredegar, then across the Heads of the Valley to Brynmawr, down through Clydach Gorge (FABULOUS!), and into Abergavenny. The route is closed along the Monmouth & Brecon Canal at Llanfoist so I followed route 46 into Abergavenny. I ended up trapped in an infinite loop trying to follow the route signage, so I just headed out of town following a sign toward Cwmbran.

I ended up on the very busy (but wide) A042 for a couple of miles until I found a sign for the canal at Llanover. Good news indeed and it made for a good lazy cycle along NCN Route 49 in the late afternoon sun to Pontypool. Once there, I had time for a quick snack and then I got back on the road to Hafodyrynys and Crumlin.

I felt good and wanted to ride just a little further, so I continued down from Newbridge to Crosskeys and hopped on the cycle path coming up through Sirhowy Park. I made it home by 6:30 pm just as it was getting dark. It turned out to be a great day.
